2009 AT&T in Monterey Bay

Pebble Beach Pro-Am
The 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament is February 9-15th
Starting as Bing Crosby’s “Clambake” in the 1930’s it has lost Bing’s moniker, but a lot of it’s traditions are intact.

The most important thing is the ‘Pro-Am’ part. Professional golfers after the hefty purse (over 6 million dollars) are paired with amateur golfers made up of celebrities, CEOs, and wealthy men. Some grumblers say the AT&T fails to attract all the top golfers because they object to the slow play. Dunno. I mean, that is serious coin.

2009 celebrities include:

  • Bill Murray
  • Tom Dreesen
  • Kenny G
  • Chris Berman
  • Kevin James
  • Carson Daly
  • Kelly Slater
  • Chris O’Donnell
  • Michael Bolton

The Pebble Beach AT&T can be great fun. This video shows Bill Murray and his hula hoopers.

The play takes place on three Monterey Bay Courses: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Poppy Hills, and Spyglass.

The Pebble Pro-Am raises a lot of money for local charities; most goes to the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and is distributed to Monterey area youth, education, health, human services, arts, community and environmental programs. There is also a ‘Guess the Birdies’ contest.

We have to catch a flight out of San Jose on the Sunday evening after the tournament and I have heard traffic can be quite bad heading north. Any faster (secret) routes we should know about?

    Hi Al;

Unfortunately there are not a bunch of choices. Avoid Highway 1 all the way up; take 156 to Highway 101 North. Then take 87 North and follow the signs to the Airport. You could follow 101 all the way, but 87 is better (and prettier!).

Hope you have a great time at the AT&T; Bill Murray is back this year – (cheers)

I need to be more clear; take Highway 1 North past marina, then take exit 156 to Prunedale (about 5 miles). you will come to Highway 101 there.

The Monterey Peninsula offers the most spectacular golfing I have ever experienced. I was pinching myself the whole time i was there just to making sure I was not dreaming. Monterey offers the best golf courses in the world! I just got back from a retreat to the Monterey Peninsula and must say this was the best golf vacation i have ever had!
