Carmel’s Tanning by the Sea and Why I Love the Matrix Tanning Bed

2 July 2009 92 views No Comment

Tanning by the Sea calls itself a Bronzing Spa. I met Tom Rivera, the owner, and mentioned how tired I am of my Carmel fog-induced pallor. Tom said, ” You gotta try the Matrix. Come on down to my place.” He gave me his card.

I followed up the next week. Tanning by the Sea is at 26352 Carmel Rancho Lane, across from Bahama Billy’s. There were several displays of beachwear for ladies and skin products.

But I was only in for some color, so I asked about the Matrix. It is the latest in tanning beds, because it doesn’t burn, and you get a 360% tan. The bed’s lid curves around like a cocoon. Tom takes reservations (which I will do in the future).

After a brief wait for the lady who had an appointment, Tom walked me into the room which houses the Matrix. I also needed some tan-accelerating lotion, which is applied prior to the session.

Instructions were easy: 3 minutes to apply lotion, pop onto the bed with protective eyewear, push the down button, and push the fan button on (yes it was quite warm). It did not feel claustrophobic; the inside is roomy.

There is a radio that plays music into the bed, but I had the fan so high I didn’t really hear it.

Tom smiled when I came out; “You have some color already.” He then had to prep the area for the next client.

I met my friend the next day and she said, “Oh, you look nice. You have a tan…” Too easy. And who doesn’t look better with a bit of a healthy tan? I will be indulging, but not over-doing.
